 Researcher Profiles Research Projects Website | about usThe International Centre for Landscape and Language was originally conceived in 1998 by three writers and scholars, Drs Glen Phillips, Andrew Taylor and John Kinsella.
The Centre gives prominence to and brings together the significant expertise of Edith Cowan University combined with national and international collaborative partners. The priority for the Centre is to promote interdisciplinarity in the study and expression of landscape, space and place. This is exemplified by research, teaching, scholarship and creative activity in all aspects of the interrelationship between landscape and language. By the latter we mean all communicative forms, verbal and non-verbal.
We have developed our own website, e-journal (Landscapes) and other publications. The Centre has organised colloquia on the theme of landscape and conducted a major international conference (On the Beach:2004). Another significant innovation has been the W.I. L.D courses (Writing in Landscapes Down-under), which provided two field-based ‘Winter Semester’ study units for international students during the mid-year break.
The executive of the Centre is currently made up of the Director, Glen Phillips, and Principals Andrew Taylor, John Kinsella, Hugo Bekle and Dr Nein Schwartz. These members have presented research papers on landscape and related issues at a numbers of national and international conferences and published both theoretical and creative works reflecting the Centre’s landscape and language focus. Other members of the support group include Drs Tom Wilson and Uta Daur, and Mr John Ryan.
