TIP OF THE ICEBERG

One gets tired of the ‘tip of the iceberg’ metaphor but few maybe realise that this can be applied to a poem. Every poem is the product of complex experience and thought distilled down to a very small coded map of all that territory. In my case, the icebergs that floated out from Devon and Dartmoor and from WA’s Wheabelt and south coast became minutely visible as the poems in “Singing Granites”, a collaboration with English poet Anne Born.

On the other hand, it was Shanghai in eastern China that produced the mass of experiences that joined up with my work in the International Centre for Landscape and Language and led to publication of “Shanghai Suite and Other Poems”.

In my presentation, aided by Professor Andrew Taylor, I will briefly describe my collaboration with Anne Born and read some of the poems from “Singing Granites”. Then I will relate how the ICLL established a working relationship with the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology led to Andrew and I teaching at the university and to the research for and creation of the second book. Andrew Taylor had earlier composed a collection of poems based on his Australia Council residency in the Whiteman Studio in Rome and this was published by the ICLL. “Shanghai Suite” is the third book to be published by the Centre in the last year or two.

The CREATEC presentation will aim to show how the two books mentioned above are merely the tips of an intense experience of foreign and home landscapes and cultures.
